Outdoor Furniture Near Pool Fences

Outdoor entertaining areas are a feature of many Gold Coast homes. Tables, chairs, lounges and storage benches make pool areas enjoyable places to relax with family and friends.

However, outdoor furniture positioned too close to a pool fence is one of the most common reasons a pool fails a safety inspection.

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that the furniture itself is not the problem—it is the opportunity it creates for a young child to climb over the pool barrier.

What Is the Non-Climbable Zone?

Queensland pool safety legislation requires a non-climbable zone (NCZ) around every compliant pool barrier.

This zone is designed to prevent children from using nearby objects to gain access to the pool.

Generally, the non-climbable zone extends:

  • 900mm outside the pool fence.
  • 300mm inside the pool fence.

Within this area there should be no objects that could reasonably assist a child to climb over the barrier.

What Furniture Can Cause Problems?

Almost any item that provides a foothold can become a climbable object.

Common examples include:

  • Outdoor dining chairs.
  • Bar stools.
  • Lounges.
  • Benches.
  • Coffee tables.
  • Storage boxes.
  • Children’s play furniture.
  • Portable BBQ trolleys.

Even lightweight furniture that is only temporarily placed beside the fence may result in a failed inspection.

Why Is This Important?

Young children are naturally curious and are excellent climbers.

A chair positioned beside a pool fence may seem harmless to an adult, but to a child it can become the first step over the safety barrier.

Pool fencing is designed to delay or prevent unsupervised access to the water. Climbable objects reduce the effectiveness of that barrier.

A Real Inspection Example

During a recent inspection in Ormeau, several outdoor chairs and a table had been placed against a frameless glass pool fence.

Although the fence and gate fully complied with Queensland legislation, the furniture created an obvious climbing aid within the non-climbable zone.

The solution was simple. The furniture was relocated well away from the fence before the inspection was completed.

No repairs were required, and once the climbable objects were removed, the property achieved compliance and a Pool Safety Certificate was issued.

Other Common Climbable Objects

Outdoor furniture is only one example.

During inspections we also regularly identify:

  • Pot plants.
  • Large decorative planters.
  • Eskies.
  • Children’s toys.
  • Pool equipment.
  • Bicycles and scooters.
  • Wheelie bins.
  • Firewood.
  • Garden ornaments.

Many homeowners simply don’t realise these items can affect compliance.

Simple Ways to Avoid Problems

Before your Pool Safety Inspection:

  • Walk around the entire pool fence.
  • Remove chairs and tables positioned beside the barrier.
  • Relocate storage boxes.
  • Move pot plants away from the fence.
  • Check that children haven’t left toys near the barrier.
  • Keep the area clear all year—not just on inspection day.

These simple checks can help avoid unnecessary delays.

From the Inspector

One of the easiest compliance issues to fix is outdoor furniture within the non-climbable zone.

I regularly arrive at properties where the fence itself is in excellent condition, but a chair, lounge or storage box has unknowingly been placed against the barrier.

Fortunately, this is usually resolved in minutes. A quick walk around your pool before the inspection can often prevent a failed result.
