Complex Pool Gate Rectification at Ashmore
At Pool Compliance Gold Coast, we were recently engaged to carry out a pool safety inspection at a residential property in Ashmore. The property featured a combination of frameless glass pool fencing and aluminium pool fencing, with separate access gates requiring inspection and testing.
This inspection demonstrated how years of normal movement and wear can gradually affect the operation of pool gates, resulting in non-compliance. Through practical engineering and careful adjustment, both gates were restored to full compliance without the need to replace the fencing.
Issue 1 – Glass Pool Gate Would Not Self-Close
The primary entrance to the pool was through a frameless glass gate.
During the inspection, it was evident that the gate had not been adjusted for many years. The hinges had lost most of their closing tension and the gate would no longer self-close and self-latch, as required under Queensland pool safety legislation.
The gate was carefully adjusted and re-tensioned. To restore reliable operation, a tension spring was installed within the hinge assembly, providing sufficient closing force for the gate to consistently self-close and engage the magnetic latch from the fully open, halfway and at-rest positions.
Issue 2 – Aluminium Side Gate No Longer Closed Correctly
A second access point to the pool was through an aluminium fence and gate located beside the house.
Over time, slight movement of the aluminium fence had caused the gate to shift out of alignment. The gate was striking the side of the building before it could close, making it impossible for the self-latching mechanism to operate correctly.
With very limited clearance available, a standard adjustment was not sufficient.
The existing gate hinges were removed and replaced with high-quality adjustable hinges. These allowed the gate to be repositioned with the smallest possible clearance between the gate and the building, restoring the correct closing path.
Although this solved the alignment issue, the magnetic latch still required more clearance than the available space allowed.
Rather than replacing the entire gate, an alternative engineering solution was developed. The magnetic latch assembly was reversed and reconfigured, allowing it to operate effectively within the restricted space while still meeting the required self-latching performance.
Following extensive adjustment and testing, the gate closed smoothly and the magnetic latch engaged consistently from all required positions.
Outcome
Although this rectification required considerably more time than a typical pool gate adjustment, the final result was extremely successful.
Both the glass pool gate and the aluminium side gate were restored to the standard originally intended by the manufacturer, allowing them to self-close and self-latch reliably in accordance with Queensland pool safety legislation.
This project highlights the importance of engaging an experienced licensed Pool Safety Inspector who can identify practical repair solutions before recommending expensive replacement fencing or gates.
At Pool Compliance Gold Coast, we specialise in finding cost-effective solutions that help homeowners, landlords, property managers and real estate professionals obtain their Pool Safety Certificate (Form 23) as quickly and economically as possible.
