Preparing Your Pool for Inspection: A Simple Checklist

Preparing for a Pool Safety Inspection doesn’t need to be stressful. In fact, spending just 20 to 30 minutes checking a few common items before your inspection can often prevent unnecessary delays and save you money on rectification work.

At Pool Compliance Gold Coast, we inspect swimming pools throughout the Gold Coast every week. Most pools that require repairs don’t have major defects—they simply have small maintenance issues that have developed over time.

This checklist will help you prepare your pool before your inspection.

  1. Check That Your Pool Gate Self-Closes

Your pool gate should automatically close and latch from the fully open position, halfway open and from just a few centimetres open.

If the gate hesitates, sticks or requires assistance to close, it may need adjustment before it complies.

A gate that does not self-close correctly is one of the most common reasons for a failed inspection.

  1. Make Sure the Gate Self-Latches

Once the gate closes, the latch must engage securely every time.

Try opening and closing the gate several times.

If the latch misses, catches or requires manual assistance, the gate will usually require adjustment.

  1. Remove Climbable Objects

Walk around the outside of your pool fence and look for anything that could be used as a step.

Common examples include:

  • Outdoor furniture.
  • Pot plants.
  • BBQs.
  • Storage boxes.
  • Children’s toys.
  • Eskies.
  • Garden ornaments.
  • Pool chemicals.
  • Ladders.

These items should be moved well away from the pool barrier before your inspection.

  1. Check Garden Taps and Hose Reels

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that taps, hose reels and associated pipework can create climb hazards if they are located within the non-climb zone.

If you have these items near your pool fence, ask your Pool Safety Inspector whether they may affect compliance.

  1. Inspect Your CPR Sign

Every regulated swimming pool must display a compliant CPR sign.

Check that your sign is:

  • Clearly visible.
  • Easy to read.
  • Securely fixed.
  • Not faded or damaged.

Replacing a worn CPR sign is one of the easiest compliance issues to rectify.

  1. Trim Trees and Vegetation

Trees, shrubs and climbing plants should not provide access over the pool fence.

Trim back any branches that are close to the barrier and remove vegetation growing through or over the fence.

  1. Check for Gaps Beneath the Fence

Walk around the entire pool barrier and look for excessive gaps beneath fencing or gates.

Ground movement, erosion and landscaping can gradually increase these gaps over time.

If something looks unusual, it is worth having it checked before the inspection.

  1. Ensure Gates Open Freely

Pool gates must open freely without scraping on the ground or becoming obstructed.

Check that:

  • Soil has not built up beneath the gate.
  • Mulch or stones are not preventing the gate from operating.
  • Landscaping is not restricting movement.

This is particularly common after recent gardening or landscaping work.

  1. Unlock All Gates and Clear Access

Before your inspection, ensure all gates are unlocked and that the inspector has clear access to every section of the pool barrier.

If access is restricted, the inspection may need to be postponed.

  1. Don’t Guess—Ask

If you’re unsure about any aspect of your pool barrier, ask before the inspection.

Many issues can be discussed over the phone, and simple advice may save you both time and money.

One of the best things a homeowner can do before an inspection is simply walk around the outside of the pool fence with fresh eyes.

Ask yourself, “If I were a curious child, what could I climb on?”

During inspections, I regularly find outdoor chairs, pot plants, taps, children’s toys and even wheelie bins positioned close enough to reduce the effectiveness of the barrier.

Spending a few minutes checking these items before your inspection can often be the difference between passing first time and needing a return visit.
