Cost-Effective Pool Barrier Rectification at Helensvale
At Pool Compliance Gold Coast, we were contacted by a homeowner in Helensvale who had received a Form 26 – Pool Safety Nonconformity Notice from another pool safety inspection company. Along with the notice, the owner had also received a quotation for the required rectification works.
The homeowner felt the proposed repairs were more extensive and expensive than necessary and requested a second opinion from our licensed Pool Safety Inspector.
After carrying out our own pool safety inspection, we identified practical, compliant and more economical solutions that would not only satisfy Queensland pool safety legislation but also maintain the appearance of the property.
Issue 1 – Glass Pool Gate Catching on the Lawn
The frameless glass pool gate was unable to self-close correctly because the bottom edge of the gate was catching on the adjacent lawn during opening. As a result, the gate could become wedged open, preventing it from automatically closing and self-latching.
Rather than altering the gate itself, the ground beneath the gate’s swing arc was excavated and paved. This provided permanent clearance for the gate to open and close freely while preserving a neat, finished appearance.
Following the work, the gate was tested from the fully open, halfway and at-rest positions to ensure reliable self-closing and self-latching.
Issue 2 – Gazebo Wall Created a Climb Hazard
A timber gazebo located within the pool area featured decorative horizontal slatted wall panels facing the pool. While visually attractive, the horizontal slats effectively created a ladder that could allow a child to climb over the nearby pool safety barrier.
To retain the existing gazebo while eliminating the climb hazard, a custom 3mm clear Perspex panel measuring approximately 2.4 metres high and 900mm wide was manufactured and installed over the affected section.
The panel was securely fixed using quality white fasteners that blended with the existing painted timber, creating a clean and unobtrusive finish while maintaining the overall appearance of the gazebo.
Issue 3 – Side Gate and Boundary Fence
The side access gate formed part of the pool safety barrier and was approximately 1200mm high. However, on the outside approach to the barrier there was a climbable feature approximately 300mm above ground level, reducing the effective barrier height below Queensland’s minimum requirements.
To restore compliance, the adjoining fence height was extended by approximately 300mm, ensuring the required minimum 1200mm effective barrier height was maintained when measured from the highest approach point.
The fence also incorporated decorative timber openings that exceeded the allowable dimensions and created additional footholds. A small clear Perspex panel was installed over this section, removing the climb hazard while preserving the appearance of the existing fence.
Issue 4 – CPR Sign
The property did not have a compliant CPR Sign displayed within the pool area.
A new compliant CPR sign was supplied and professionally installed in accordance with Queensland pool safety legislation.
Outcome
By carefully assessing each issue rather than simply replacing existing structures, Pool Compliance Gold Coast delivered a practical, attractive and cost-effective solution that achieved full pool barrier compliance.
All rectification work was quoted, completed and tested efficiently, allowing the homeowner to avoid unnecessary expense while achieving a professional result suitable for certification.
This project highlights the value of obtaining an experienced second opinion when issued with a Form 26 Nonconformity Notice. In many cases, practical engineering solutions can achieve compliance without major reconstruction.
